Tips to choose a ripe avocado

  • A ripe avocado will have a dark green or almost black skin. If the avocado is still bright green, it is not yet ripe.
  • To check for ripeness, gently squeeze the avocado in the palm of your hand. A ripe avocado will be firm but yield slightly to pressure.
  • If the stem of the avocado is still attached, gently pop it off to check the colour underneath. If the area underneath the stem is green, the avocado is likely still unripe. If it is a golden-yellow colour, the avocado is ripe and ready to eat.
  • Avoid avocados with large bruises or blemishes on the skin. These can be a sign of damage or mould and can affect the quality of the flesh inside.
  • If you plan to use the avocado immediately, choose one that is ripe and ready to eat. If you are not planning to use it right away, choose one that is still slightly firm and allow it to ripen at room temperature.
